At the Maison de Sérénne Foundation, sustainability is not an add-on — it is a core principle that shapes everything we do.

The fashion industry is one of the world’s largest contributors to environmental harm, driven by over-production, fast fashion, and the disposal of perfectly usable clothing. Every year, millions of garments are sent to landfill despite having years of life left in them.

We believe there is a different way — one rooted in care, creativity and responsibility.

Rethinking clothing: reuse, not replace

Our approach starts with a simple question:

What if we valued what we already have?

Instead of encouraging constant consumption, we focus on:

• Re-using existing garments

• Re-designing clothing to meet new needs

• Transforming overlooked or unwanted textiles into something meaningful and beautiful

By extending the life of clothing, we reduce waste, conserve resources, and challenge the idea that “new” is always better.

Recycling and upcycling textiles

The Foundation will actively:

• Re-purpose donated or surplus clothing

• Upcycle textiles into new garments and functional designs

• Use reclaimed fabrics in the creation of medical, adaptive and everyday clothing

This includes turning garments that may no longer work for one person into something entirely new for another — ensuring textiles continue to serve a purpose rather than becoming waste.

• Natural and lower-impact materials

• Durable fabrics designed for longevity

• Thoughtful design that reduces future waste

Teaching skills, not just making products

Sustainability is also about knowledge and empowerment.

We will run education and skills-based initiatives that:

• Teach people how to alter, adapt and repair clothing

• Encourage creative modification rather than disposal

• Build confidence in making small, meaningful changes to garments

• Show how clothing can evolve alongside life changes, health needs or body changes

By teaching people how to care for and reimagine their clothing, we help reduce reliance on fast fashion while fostering creativity and self-expression.

Making clothing from recycled materials

Alongside reuse, we will explore the creation of new garments using:

• Recycled and reclaimed fabrics

• Surplus materials from the fashion and textile industries

• Textiles that would otherwise be discarded

These garments will be designed with the same care, elegance and purpose as everything we create, proving that sustainable clothing can be functional, dignified and beautiful.

Raising awareness: the impact of fast fashion

Education is central to meaningful change.

We will actively share information about:

• The environmental impact of fast fashion

• The social and ethical costs of over-production

• The benefits of buying less, choosing well and using clothing for longer

• How individual choices contribute to collective environmental harm or healing

Fast fashion relies on constant consumption, short product lifespans, and disposable design. The result is:

• Excessive water use

• Chemical pollution

• Exploitative labour practices

• Growing landfill waste

We aim to help people understand not just what the problem is, but what they can do differently.

Sustainability with compassion

Our sustainability work is rooted in compassion, for people and for the planet.
